Position Type: Regular Scheduled Hours per 2 week Pay Period: 80 Primary Location: IA > WEST DES MOINES > MERCY WEST LAKES GENERAL SUMMARY : The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgical Clinical Reviewer’s (MBSCR) chief responsibility is to collect and submit reliable data to the ACS Bariatric Data Registry Platform.  This task is accomplished through high-quality data compilation, documentation, and entry of all of bariatric procedures performed at the center in the ACS Bariatric Data Registry Platform.  The MBSCR works closely with the members of the bariatric, hospital administration and general surgery departments to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as may be identified. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Creates a process to ensure identification of all of bariatric surgery patients for inclusion in the data registry. Collects preoperative, intraoperative, 30 day postoperative and long term (six month and annual thereafter) follow-up data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems and through a coordinated effort with hospital, program and surgeon. Contacts patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications postoperatively for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with surgical procedures performed at the hospital Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process. Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the program. Utilizes software applications for data collection and analysis. Responsible for the accurate and timely entry of data in the program’s database. Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the surgery, program office, ancillary departments, nursing, medical records and information systems departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the program. Serves as an educational resource on the Bariatric Data Registry Platform for internal and external audiences by developing educational material and delivering presentations. Participates in Bariatric Data Registry and proactively provides information to the Bariatric Coordinator and the Program Director of Mercy Weight Loss and Nutrition Center for use in program planning, development and clinical outcome studies. Successfully completes the MBSCR Training Program. Participates in program teleconferences. Participates in data compilation for audits and accreditation (initial and reaccreditation) site visits. Demonstrates the ability to track down information through various sources such as medical records, surgery clinic, social security death index, direct patient contact, accounts payable, and legal counsel. Demonstrates the ability to identify opportunities to report bariatric data to relevant groups or meetings. The candidate should have some experience sharing information across functions. Demonstrates the ability to build relationships and gain alignment for clinical support and be able to articulate questions to receive an appropriate level of support from superiors and peers. Participates in professional development seminars offered at various annual meeting such as ASMBS, ACS NSQIP, and ACS Clinical Congress. Maintains working and active knowledge of data entry process expectations to ensure program compliance. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED : Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa. BSN preferred. Obtains a certification (with a minimum score of 90%) as required by the American College of Surgeons within one (1) year of hire. Minimum of one year experience in a hospital surgery department or surgery clinic or with clinical research or medical records preferred. Experience with Microsoft Office products required. Database data entry, basic statistical knowledge and/or management experience preferred. Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience preferred. Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter Abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
