The Excess & Surplus Home Office Underwriting Manager strategically provides commercial property and casualty expertise and oversight with our book of E & S business. The incumbent is responsible for working with our Managing General Underwriters to oversee the underwriting profitability and performance of the book. In this vital role, the E & S Manager is the coverage, policy, and underwriting expert for E & S business.
Our ideal Excess & Surplus Underwriting Manager will be a strategic thinker, technically strong as an E&S underwriter, and an excellent verbal and written communicator. As our subject matter expert (SME) for the E &S business, the E & S Manager will be the main point of contact and driving force for the work assigned to the MGU's.
As our Excess & Surplus Home Office Underwriting Manager, you will:
Partner with our Managing General Underwriter to ensure underwriting profitability
Addresses current and emerging technical underwriting issues.
Leads and conducts product development activities for the E & S market.
Formulates underwriting policy, including all changes to underwriting guidelines and procedures.
Aids and supports Product Managers in conducting market research for enhancements and trends of niche market.
Conducts research, development, and maintenance of coverage forms.
Coordinates communication of changes to underwriting guidelines and procedures to internal staff and external customers.
In conjunction with Sales, works to build relationships with wholesale brokers and assist in executing the contracts.
Identifies and implements tools utilized by production and HO UW teams for guidelines and UW risk assessments.
Serves as product expert for sales in the development and maintenance of training tools for agents and as a resource for product knowledge for UW. Works with members of marketing to develop promotional materials.
Directs and improves methodologies for the underwriting audit function and provides requirements for ongoing reports to underwriting leadership for improved quality control and effective controls that ensure adherence to underwriting policy.
Works with Product Management to develop initiatives to improve cross-sell ratios.
Identifies product development and insurance industry trends.
Analyzes current departmental workflows, looking for possible improvements that will enhance service and reduce expenses.
Reviews and recommends UW levels of authorities and reviews referrals over those authorities.
Researches questions from field underwriting, and assists with complex accounts.
Serves as a Commercial Lines liaison with reinsurance company representatives. Fosters a solid working relationship with reinsurers in order to secure risk transfer alternatives that are in the best interest of the Commercial division.
Participates as SME on a variety of committee and task force assignments as needed.
Supports Commercial Systems enhancements as business SME as needed.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Seven years of Commercial Property & Casualty Underwriting experience required.
Five years of Excess & Surplus underwriting experience including experience with property and construction risks.
Experience partnering with a MGU preferred.
Experience working with wholesale brokers required.
Management experience preferred.
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
Master's Degree in Business is preferred.
Additional Skills & Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to use advanced underwriting and management concepts, practices and procedures within the commercial P&C insurance field.

Must be flexible and comfortable with taking calculated risks, solutions oriented, and possess keen insight into short and long term strategies.
Awareness and understanding of the legal and regulatory environment in the markets served.
Strong analytical skills with an ability to compare data to formulate and prepare objective projections.
