The Home Office Underwriting Manager for our casualty niche strategically serves as the commercial expertise and oversight into policies, procedures, training and auditing for casualty lines of business. The incumbent is responsible for helping to set the casualty strategy direction, ensuring our commercial underwriters execute sound underwriting practices that enable them to maximize premium growth and profitability. The Casualty Home Office Manager leads team members to become the coverage, policy, and UW experts needed to support our commercial business.
Our ideal Home Office Underwriting Manager will be a strategic thinker, excellent communicator, with extensive casualty underwriting experience.
As Home Office Underwriting Manager for Casualty, you will:
Address current and emerging technical underwriting issues.
Lead and conduct product development activities for casualty lines of business
Formulate underwriting policy, including all changes to underwriting guidelines and procedures.
Aid and support product managers in conducting market research for enhancements and trends of niche market.
Oversee research, development, and maintenance of coverage forms.
Coordinate communication of changes to underwriting guidelines and procedures to internal staff and external customers.
Identify and implement tools utilized by production and HO UW teams for guidelines and UW risk assessments.
Direct and oversee content for the underwriting training curriculum.
Serve as product expert for sales in the development and maintenance of training tools for agents and as a resource for product knowledge for UW. Works with members of marketing to develop promotional materials.
Direct and improve methodologies for the underwriting audit function and provides requirements for ongoing reports to underwriting leadership for improved quality control and effective controls that ensure adherence to underwriting policy.
Work with product management to develop initiatives to improve cross-sell ratios.
Identify product development and insurance industry trends.
Analyze current departmental workflows, looking for possible improvements that will enhance service and reduce expenses.
Review and recommend UW levels of authorities and reviews referrals over those authorities.
Research questions from field underwriting, and assists with complex accounts.
Serve as a Commercial Lines liaison with reinsurance company representatives. Foster a solid working relationship with reinsurers in order to secure risk transfer alternatives that are in the best interest of the Commercial division.
Participate as SME on a variety of committee and task force assignments as needed.
Support Commercial Systems enhancements as business SME as needed.
Perform other related work as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
Master's Degree in Business is preferred.
Seven years of Casualty Commercial Underwriting experience required.
Five years of supervisory or management experience required.
Prior people leadership experience preferred.
Additional Skills and abilities:
Demonstrated ability to use advanced underwriting and management concepts, practices and procedures within the commercial P&C insurance field.

Must be flexible and comfortable with taking calculated risks, solutions oriented, and possess keen insight into short and long term strategies.
Awareness and understanding of the legal and regulatory environment in the markets served.
Strong analytical skills with an ability to compare data to formulate and prepare objective projections
